Officine Meccaniche Sarimi is a workshop specialising in metal carpentry, operating in the maritime sector since 1982.
Its activities include the construction and repair of ships, ferries, pontoons and superyachts, forming an integral part of the production processes involved in ship repair and the refitting of large vessels.
The workshop manufactures all types of steel and light alloy products, from individual hull blocks to entire boats, including structural elements such as blocks, stabiliser fins, bulbous bows, masts, funnels, swimming pools and piping.
It is also equipped to carry out hull extensions, with the prefabrication of blocks in situ at its production site, particularly for superyachts.
The history of the Amico family has its roots in Varazze, where between the 18th and 19th centuries the Amico family were part of a community with strong ties to the sea and shipbuilding.
In an area where almost the entire population worked in shipyards and where the craftsmanship of carpenters, caulkers, blacksmiths and sail makers reached the highest levels, the Amico family distinguished itself for its competence, professionalism and dedication.
In 1799, Matteo Amico, a master shipbuilder, set out on his own path by moving to Loano and founding a small shipyard, which his son Giuseppe Francesco transformed into a solid business specialising in the construction of medium and large sailing ships.
With the transition to steel hulls and steam propulsion, the shipyard ceased operations, but the family continued its maritime activities, gradually moving to Genoa.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, Pietro Amico worked as a carpenter at the Regio Cantiere della Foce shipyard and later became a member of the Port Carpenters and Caulkers Guild. It was he who established the family’s roots in Genoa.
In 1885, the Amico company was officially founded by Michele, Pietro’s son, establishing itself as a port business at a time of profound change in the naval industry.
In 1920, the business passed to Luigi Amico, a key figure in the company’s development thanks to his professionalism, flexibility and ability to introduce innovative technologies.
After the war, Luigi led the company through a process of modernisation that led it, from the 1960s onwards, to introduce cutting-edge methods and equipment: from high-pressure sandblasting to hydraulic platforms, from automated systems to ultra-high pressure hydroblasting in the 1990s.
In the 1950s, Guido Amico joined the company and gradually took over its management. Under his leadership, Luigi Amico established itself as a leading provider of technical port services and, thanks to his vision, a project was launched in the 1980s to build a new shipyard in what was then an abandoned area of the port of Genoa.
This insight marked the beginning of a new phase in the family’s history: in 1991, Amico & Co was founded by Guido and his son Alberto, who carried on the family tradition by applying it to a growing sector, the refit and maintenance of large yachts.
